Traveller RPG: Painting a Giant 3D Printed Beowulf

We printed and painted a bunch of Trench Crusade!

The process was straightforward:

- The client sent us his files to print, for his personal use

- we printed them, on his behalf

We printed the minis for about 10% the cost of the painting. These were printed on stronger, ABS-like resin.

If you send us your files we can print-and-paint Trench Crusade for you, on your behalf, for your personal use.

(We can’t use any files we already have, sorry. Those belong to other clients.. We don’t have any rights to them, commercial or otherwise.)

Tariffs? What Tariffs?

Short Answer: We’re Not Impacted.

Long answer follows! 

US Customs and Border Protection does not bother with anything valued under $800*:

This is the “De Minimus” exemption. Basically, its not worth their time bothering with it.

Nothing we ship is valued anywhere near $800. In fact, we normally value our shipments at $20-$25 per box. Yes. Yes.


* Now, on April 2nd, the De Minimis exemption was cut for China and Hong Kong:

However, there's nothing to suggest Sri Lanka will also lose De Minimis. I feel if so, we'd have lost it on the same day, or on Liberation Day. 

So, we have no plans to raise any rates.

It’s not clear what the future may bring but honestly, Sri Lanka is the smallest of small potatoes in this trade war. Like a stormtrooper with a bad helmet radio, we go unnoticed.

Spotlight: 3D Print and Paint, One Page Rules Saurian Starhost

We recently printed two One Page Rules armies for a client. We had used “standard” resin. Essentially the same kind we have been using for the past 5 years.

Of late though, we've been working with much stronger ABS-like resin. We like it so much more, we realized there was no way we could give the client the armies in standard resin. They needed to be ABS, too. So, we did that.

This left us with a bunch of standard resin minis which were now junk. So, we painted some of them up anyway, just to show you what's possible with Print and Paint.

These were painted to Exhibition Quality. The additional pricing for the printing was something trivial, like 10% or 15% more. It's not even worth looking up.

The Hunters AD 2114 is a post-apocalypse boardgame where players take down robot animal monsters that make a nuisance of themselves. The figures (and premise) remind me of Horizon 0 Dawn.

How to “Skip” the Line and Get Painting Every Month

One day, a client ordered less painting than usual.

He then asked if he could know when the next month opened up. I said sure, and I did.

He then placed another similar sized order. Again, he asked to be told when the following month’s schedule opened up.

He then did the same. Again, and again, and again.

After a few months, he was getting a regular, monthly supply. I called this ‘pipelining.’ Other clients started doing it, too. Instead of paying the premium for priority, they set aside a monthly budget and for the most part kept to it. This gets them both better rates and better access.

Pipelining for “Immediate” Access

It doesn’t matter what is booked. Only that capacity to do some painting, has been booked.

You may book some Marvel United. However, when the time comes, if you ask us to paint your shrinkwrap-fresh Death Korps instead, we will. As long as the capacity needed is about the same, it is not a problem.

In this way, pipeline clients have been getting “trending” minis painted, without having to add them to the back of the queue.

How to Pipeline

  • Email us and ask us to add you to the list. When the next month opens for bookings, you will be notified first.

  • If you wish, place an order. Try to pick a volume you wouldn’t mind having to shell out, once or even twice a month. This is not a subscription; there is no pressure to order. The pipe can be as full or dry as you want to make it.

To Support Pipelining, We Discontinued Priority

Everyone likes better access, but not everyone was happy to pay more for the same quality of painting. Setting aside capacity for Priority was aggravating the wait time for most clients, not improving it.

We also noticed pipelining clients don’t pay for priority - because they don’t need to.

So, we’ve discontinued priority (if you already have a priority order please don’t worry, you are fine. We are just not taking new priority orders). That capacity has gone back into the general pool. This is good for everyone — especially pipeliners.
