Necromunda: Hive Secundus; Spyres, Van Saars, and Malstrain Genestealers

I’ve often wondered why no one in the Imperium had experimented with Tyranids. They are perfect “perfect weapon” trope. Perhaps there was some fluff reason against it?

No. It was just that no one had got around to it yet. Hive Secondus is a nice little look into genestealer experimentation, a wrecked and abandoned hive, and fun figures like the Spyres - and a caryatid!

40k: Painting Forgeworld Imperial Knights with Weathering

Did us some big, heavy, Forgeworld Knights! Business as usual, except these guys needed some weathering. We found two effects worked best with them. Rust streaks, and paint chips. Being such different styles, I feel they worked well when put together.

40k: Painting Blood Angels Space Marines on Cracked Earth Basing

“Are you going to drink that or what?”

I very much like how this army came together. The clean schemes are easy on the eye. I like how they “sit” against the earth basing. The cracks add character, but don’t compete in any way with the minis.

A little NMM here and there . We are still flirting with NMM and doing just the basics here and there. The appeal is clear!

We Painted too Many Bloodthirsters! - Blood for the Warhammer 40k Blood God

“Careful boys, the ground is lava!”

Five Bloodthirsters, one of whom is Skarbrand. Nice and angry. Perhaps dancing at a metal concert, but definitely angry. In some pics you can see the 3D printed elements we added to the bases to give them a bit more pzazz.

Team Yankee - Showcase British, American, and Soviets!

Nice to see some Team Yankee after a long while. 15mm is actually my preferred scale. It’s compelling, it lets you put a ton of assets down for a battle, and the modelling and painting is forgiving!

An unusual scheme we were asked to do. That’s a lot of orange! Reminds me of the “shock value” Tyranid schemes I’d see back in the day.

Necromunda: These Goliaths are Feeling a Bit Blue...

This was a fun one. The client gave us the color scheme.

We’d not done this sort of pallid, zombie-like skin tone on a gang before, except maybe the Delaques. It worked welll on these, offsetting the dark tones. The brown in the amor in turn played well against the electric blue.

40k: The Most Unusual-looking Tyranids We've Ever Painted

I have a Tyranid army that I am quite fond of. It is, if I may say so, the Tyranid of someone who’s run a painting service for 20 years. I cuddle it a night. We go for long walks together. We go out for bioplasma in the park.

Then, we were asked to match the color scheme you see here. Someone else’s strange and inventive take on Hive Fleet Behemoth.

The result? Well, I still love my Tyranid army. Yet, like any Asian parent, I prefer one child over the other.

Even in their heyday, we didn’t see Elysians very often. We might have done 2 or 3 armies, tops.

It was nice then to see this army turn up. It also came with quite a number of flyers: proper air cavalry.

40k: in 20 Years painting these are our first ever Tallarns

We’ve been painting IG since they used to be IG.
Cadians. Elysians. Catachans.
Krieg, Mordians, Praetorians.
Rogue Trader Warriors. Penal Legion. Those really old Stormtroopers in the berets.

Yet, we’ve never done Tallarns before. These are the first. They’re mostly conversions and proxies, but that’s good enough for Imperial Government work.

Painting Salamander Space Marines with Bubbling Lava Bases

We’ve painted Salamander Chapter Space Marines so many times we’ve given those commissions their own web page. Here we did another interpretation of the scheme. What stood out most was the bases. The client wanted a bubbling lava effect.

For this we used beads of varying sizes. We blended their edges in with the bases using some modelling paste. Some cork for dark, rocky elevation, and the rest was painting.

Genestealer Cultists with Cool Spectrum Tones

This was another fun job. We had to work with an existing, dark blue tone. The brief was to keep the same, evil sort of cooler tone and mood.

We added in purple and green. The tie it all together, a bit of bright red

The lights could have gone in many directions — bright blue, bright green, or yellow. Yellow of course worked well with the blue tone, and wherever you can sneak in all 3 primary colors, you do alright.
